GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve is damaged, usually due to increased eye pressure. This is normally a slow process and, if untreated, can cause gradual loss of peripheral vision. Early diagnosis greatly increases the chances of preventing further damage to vision.

People with family history of glaucoma are at an increased risk of getting it, so are short-sighted (myopic) people and those from Afro-Caribbean background. If you are aged 40 or over and have a close relative with glaucoma, you may be entitled to free NHS sight test. For more information see Do I need to pay for my sight test?
